Someone asked if anyone has seen a Purple Mountain Engineering bear
canister. I own one. I bought it around 3 yrs ago and have used it only once.
It is almost new (just a few scratches on the bottom). It has the same holding
capacity as the Garica can (i.e. approx 730 cu in) but only weighs 2 lbs 6
oz...that's 6 oz lighter than the Garica. Since it is made of heavy duty aircraft
aluminum, it is more slender than the bulky injection-molded plastic Garcia
can which has that annoying raised bead running across the middle of the
can. The Purple Mtn can has the same snap-lock mechanism as the Wild
Ideas Bearikade. Also, it is anodized a metallic magenta color so you can
spot it easily (in case a bear rolls it away from original location). Since I just
bought the carbon fiber Bearikade, I am willing to sell the Purple Mtn bear
canister for $85 plus $3 shipping. If you seriously want to buy it, I can email
you photos of it. I will respond to serious inquires emailed directly to me at

That "annoying raised bead" (and the sort of pudgy shape) are actually
there for a reason, as you'll find out if you've ever tried to roll
one of them in a straight line. If a bear bats the Garcia, it tends to
run in a circle, which works to keep it from going a long, long way in
a straight line. It (the center bead) may also serve to strengthen the
can, but injection molding has nothing to do with the bulk otherwise.

And finally, the Purple Mountain bear can, if it's really 8" x 12",
can only have a capacity of 603 cubic inches, not 730 (unless those
dimensions are wrong),and that would actually be correct only if those
were its interior dimensions. The Garcia lists its capacity at 614, I
think, and its dimensions are 8.8" x 12" . The Bearikade Weekender, at
9" x10", actually has about 630 cubic inches of volume, though they
list it as 650. Usability is a whole 'nother issue.

What's the price for a NEW PME bear can?

Some birds drop shell fish to crack them open. Otters use stones to crack
urchins. I wonder how long before a bear figures out how to drop a canister
off a cliff. What a memorable score! and one well worth teaching the cubs
about.

Good point David. One of the suggestions the bear can manufacturer
made in the information that came with the can I bought was to leave
the can in a depression and never near a cliff or a body of water.
That's so if a bear knocks it around it will remain in the general
area where it was left, and not wind up submerged or over a
precipice. A bear can't pick up the canister, but it can swat it
about, so it's up to the hiker to leave it in a place that doesn't
encourage knocking it off a cliff. :^) Best, Don L.

at the ADZPCTKO 2002, Monte, in a bear suit, tried to break into a
packed Garcia can. He jumped on it, through it against picnic tables,
and did everything he could think of to get into it. After all, there
was a wager on the line. He was unable to do so, and lost the bet.

Apparently the brand-new price on the Purple Mountain Engineering
all-aluminum anodized some pretty bright color and 6 ounces lighter
(and .8 inch narrower) than the Garcia bear canister and which is
approved (take a breath) is $99.95. About 600 cubic inches. About 2
lbs 6 oz.

To review: The big yellow Counter Assault polywhosis canister that
looks like a bloated Garcia (including the shape and band around the
middle) and is approved is $79.95. About 850 cubic inches, about 3 lbs
1 oz.

The Wild-Ideas Bearikade Weekender carbon fiber and aluminum canister
which is about 10" H x 9" diameter and is approved is $195.00 and
weighs 1 lb 15 oz. About 630 cubic inches.

The Wild-Ideas Bearikade Expedition carbon fiber and aluminum canister
which is about 9" diameter x 14" high and is approved is $245 and
weighs 2 lbs 5 oz. About 890 cubic inches.

And then there's the Garcia, at 12" x 8.8", approved, at $69.95 (at
REI), and weighs 2 lbs 12 oz. About 600-614 cubic inches.
