Hi Robert,
I only slept one night, in summer, in this bag, as it was borrowed. I
just wanted to see how it worked. It was certainly different, but I
didn't really like it. You wriggle into it, and the elastic outside
shell compresses the insulation around your outline, reducing the
area inside the bag. Theoretically, this gives less area for your own
warmth to have to heat up inside the bag. I wonder if the designer
overestimated the effect this would have in increasing warmth, and
then lowered the amount of loft too much; the bag was not really very
warm for the night I used it, which I estimate got into the middle
thirties.

This bag might be O.K. for summer, but I didn't find it to be
particularly warm even then. Maybe that's a good thing because it was
virtually impossible to ventilate. I was used to using a quilt, which
was much easier to get into and out of, warmer, (and of course VERY
easy to ventilate,) I thought this lack of versatililty was pretty
undesirable.

The bag's basic idea has been criticized because it automatically
compresses the loft somewhat, which I suppose is true. IF you can get
one that fits your above average height, and if you don't want to
take it much below 40* F. it might be worth sending for to try out at
home, but I wasn't overly fond of the bag.

I'm not really convinced that this bag is in any way superior to
using either a quilt or a more conventional bag for that same
temperature range, unless you are a sleeper that changes position so
often that you absolutely need a sleeping bag that just won't allow
you to get uncovered.

It will be interesting to see if Sierra Designs abandons this design
or continues to use it for bags in the future. I don't think it has
been very popular with hikers. Best, Don L.

I haven't figured out how to update the file (you can still read the original review at the above site) without uploading a new file at bpgt.org, so here is the quicky version:

I spent 8 nights out in early Sept in the Cascades in Eastern Washington state. Elevations averaged around 5400 feet with the temps around 72F day / 47F night. Unlike my previous camping with this bag, I spent all 8 nights under a Henry Shire's tarptent, so I was missing the additional insulating quality of a tent. The moonlight was perfect in these conditions. I think maybe one morning I woke up and wished I had a warmer bag. I never did use my extra clothing to further insulate the bag. The lack of a zipper has not bothered me thus far...but then I have not been sleeping in warm conditions like 75F or higher. I still wish the bag was a couple inches longer so I could stretch out better without smashing the insulation. I'm not sure what Campmor has it on sale for, but I still can't believe the deal I got on this one. If it were not on sale, though, I would save my pennies for a Western Mt bag or Feathered Friends.

Jason
